This may sound strange coming from a person who writes zombie novels with guts, gore and death, but I am actually pretty easily grossed out. Poop, especially, is just… not okay. And yet it seems like so many movies, especially comedies, go to the poop jokes pretty much from note one. Let’s just say I had to leave during certain parts of the second Austin Powers movie.
This has lead my husband and I to a solution that has stood the test of time for thousands of years. The ancients used this method, so you know it’s good. He becomes my tester. Movie tester. If we think there might be something gag worthy… he watches the movie first. And then we discuss. He advises. Or at least tells me the parts where I should close my eyes and cover my ears.
This is our system. And it works for us.
So do you ever need a “food taster” for certain things? Scary/gross/whatever?
We do the same thing in our house. I used to love all horror and over the years they started really freaking me out so I stopped watching all together. Now my husband and my 2 teens will let me know if I can “handle” certain movies, shows etc for the scary factor. We rate it on a scale of “Like Zombieland—funny, not scary, not too gross” all the way to “The Exorcist = no way in HELL will I even let the DVD in the house”. So far it works, you’re not alone! BTW love, love, love your zombie books and I’m going thru withdrawal, please keep writing!!
It sounds stupid but I do the same thing for nature shows. My husband and I like to watch discovery and animal planet. But, I am extremely allergic to bees. So, I have developed a phobia against them. I can’t stand to see them or even hear them. I start to hyperventilate. So, my hubby always keeps the remote next to him so he can pause it and I can leave the room. He jokes around with me that I can read books with all sorts of gory monsters and watch any scary movie but a little bee on t.v. and I’m out. My nightmares, yeah some of them are bee related. I almost wrecked the jeep one day when a bee flew in. Also, I LOVE your books. I bought In The Dead a few weeks ago and it was great! More , please! I love the zombie world you’ve created and I thought of Russell Brand too when I read Eat, Slay Love. When will the monster book be coming out?
