On January 2nd I put out a call for questions (in conjunction with a contest) and many of you asked some great ones! Every Wednesday (until I run out of questions), I’ll be answering them here! There may be ones that are related, so I’ll answer multiple questions at once. You can always add a new questions to the queue by posting them as a comment here.
Jennifer K asked: Do you find that you write better in the morning or late at night?
The first thing you have to know about me as a writer is that I have a page goal every day when I’m writing, normally ten pages a day, five days a week. This means I write a first draft in between 6-8 weeks. I have to be pretty strict with myself to get those pages done. The second thing you should know is that I’m a list-maker. I have a mousepad that’s also a to-do list (best. gift. ever.) and on it is sort of a weekly calendar. I put everything I have to do in that calendar and every single weekday that calendar has “10 pgs Whatever Project I’m Working On”. Of course it doesn’t SAY “Whatever Project I’m Working On”, it says a project name or shorthand for the project (TZW was The Zombie Whisperer, you get the idea).
Anyway, I like crossing things off that list. I feel twitchy if I’m halfway through my day and something hasn’t been crossed off. Hell, I’ve ADDED things to my list just to cross them off.
What I’m getting at, in a round about way, is that I start writing in the morning. I get up, have my breakfast while I do my email, then I start to write. I get the bulk of my pages done during that time. In fact, sometimes I’ll be done by ten am and then the rest of the day is mine to…. well, promo, clean my house, work on stuff for Relay For Life and basically try to catch up on ten thousands other things. Still, I know I’ve done my job for the day and that makes me happy.
So morning, at least under normal circumstances.
What about you other writers? Do you have a set schedule like I do? Do you write in the morning or night? And why?
