On January 2nd I put out a call for questions (in conjunction with a contest) and many of you asked some great ones! Every Wednesday (until I run out of questions), I’ll be answering them here! There may be ones that are related, so I’ll answer multiple questions at once. You can always add a new questions to the queue by posting them as a comment here.
Eric says: Flip This Zombie opened the door to the possibility of zombie intelligence. Can zombies evolve intelligence on their own given enough time (and dare I say natural selection)? Or will they just whither away and die when their food supply is exhausted? Love the books!!!!!
It was really fun giving my zombies some super-ish powers and guidance in Flip This Zombie. It made them a little scarier to think that they could choose to eat you, rather than just anyone on the block. Of course, the super zombies were limited since the doctor only made a few in his lab. And I guess that’s where I come down on that issue. I don’t think zombies could develop that kind of intelligence unless they were made to have it by experimentation. Zombies have dead brains, they are shells.
Of course, lots of recent work out there that is fantastic has thinker zombies. Warm Bodies comes to mind and I loved it! But I think overall, I still prefer the big, scary zombie who isn’t doing anything except eat anyone in his path. Choice makes him less scary in a way.
Now as for what happens to zombies if they run out of food…. an interesting thought. In some movies they do “die” if the people hide long enough. I didn’t get that far in my story, so I never really considered it. But they have to eat the brains for something, right? I would guess that some point they would die if they didn’t get whatever it is.
What about you guys? Where do you fall on zombie intelligence and how long it takes for a zombie to die of natural causes?
