Question Wednesday: How I Got to MWZ

On January 2nd I put out a call for questions (in conjunction with a contest) and many of you asked some great ones! Every Wednesday (until I run out of questions), I’ll be answering them here! There may be ones that are related, so I’ll answer multiple questions at once. You can always add a new questions to the queue by posting them as a comment here.

Kirsty says: Hi Jesse, my question is, where did your inspiration come from for the married with zombies series. what triggered in your mind and did you know it would be such a success?

Well, I’ve said a few times that I started to get the kernal of the idea while watching Zombieland, which came out in 2009. I think that combo of funny and zombie sort of sparked something in me. But I never thought it would be a success or even get published. I was having a personal stuggle in my writing life and I wanted to write a fun story to entertain myself. That was what I did probably for half the book or more, just wrote it to be the story I wanted to read. If I made myself laugh, a joke stayed in.

Then my agent got wind (from me) that I was writing it. I passed it along to her and she liked it. Alot. She thought she could sell it and I can’t say that didn’t change the tenor of my writing, though I still was writing a story that was for me, first and foremost. In the end, that’s the best thing I can do. Love what I write and hopefully a lot of you will come along for the ride in the end.
