Joining Club Monstrosity by My Pocket Editor Adam Wilson

Hi everyone! Today we're joined by a very special guest, my editor Adam Wilson. Adam is awesome, but you'll see that soon enough:  If you’re like me, you read The BFG growing up and were enchanted by Sophie and her friendship with the world’s only kind giant.  If you’re even more like me, you owned not one but several encyclopedias (bestiaries!) of assorted monsters and beings. Some were D&D related. Some were just whatever pictorial endeavor was available at the library. Some were...ahem...self-made Read more [...]

Classic Monster Movies

There's something about a classic monster movie that has always appealed to me. Bela Lagosi as Dracula, Boris Karloff as Frankenstein's Monster, Lon Chaney as the Phantom of the Opera, those old black and white movies have always appealed to me. Maybe it's the weird lighting that makes them special. Like when Dracula is about to bite Mina and the light is so stark that everyone is super white and their eyes are all big and creepy. It's silly and scary all at once. The costumes from those early Read more [...]

Swamp Dwellers: What the Hell?

When I started writing Club Monstrosity, I decided to create a monster that is semi my own. Linda is a Swamp Dweller. Now she may bear somewhat of a resemblance to some other monsters but for purposes of copyrighting and not losing my shirt in a lawsuit, she's kind of her own thing. Linda is a lizard or fish-type creature whose body is covered in scales. This means she has to wear heavy make-up to cover up who and what she is. I had a lot of fun with Linda. I wanted her to be a strong piece of Read more [...]

Introducing Kai: Mummy Businesswoman

Mummies are sort of an interesting monster to me. I've always loved Egyptian history, in fact my first published novella was set in Egypt (written under my Jess Michaels name). I never miss a chance to see the Egyptian area in the Met when I go to New York. We went to see the Tut stuff when it came through Chicago a few years ago (before we moved to Arizona). I've also always loved mummy movies. The Brendan Frasier/Rachel Wiesz movies from the 90s are some of my favorites (that is one sexy mummy, Read more [...]

Introducing Alec Dunham, Wolfman

Werewolves and Wolfmen legends have been around forever. One of the earliest comes from 1591 and involves a rape-y, murder-y farmer who liked to dress like a wolf and chase little girls. Charming. That, obviously, is not what I was going for when I created the character of Alec Dunham in Club Monstrosity. I wanted more Teen Wolfish (one of my favorite werewolf movies) than Killer Raping Wolves From the Middle Ages. So I made him sort of laid back, funny and obsessed with body hair. He's a ladies Read more [...]

Introducing Natalie Gray, Frankenstein’s Monster

There's just something about Frankenstein's Monster. Mary Shelley really created a truly sad and fearful creature in her 1818 classic, FRANKENSTEIN. The Creature is violent, but also confused. And the Doctor is both brilliant and utterly mad, with no thought for the consequences of his actions for either his creation or those that creation will encounter. It's truly a great book and I recommend it if you haven't done so. When I had an idea for a monster book, my Frankenstein's Monster character, Read more [...]

Happy Birthday to My Hero!

I met my husband in high school. We were in Debate Club together, we were even briefly debate partners. But mostly we were friends and then, suddenly, we were more than friends. We married in college, when we were both just twenty. In retrospect, far too young... except that it worked. We've been married for 16 years and honestly, he's totally my best friend. If you ever set up appearances or blog stuff with me, you'll talk to him. He signed on to be my assistant, so you'll see how nice he is. Read more [...]

No Foolin’ April is Monster Month

Happy April Fool's Day! I'm not much of a prankster and I don't really liked getting pranked (last year my SIL and BIL convinced us our nephew had hurt his hand. Seriously. Dude. I still haven't forgiven you two. I will have my revenge. But it will be cold and you will never see it coming. Anyway, sorry, instead of pranking all of you, I thought I'd tell you what is going to happening here in April. April 29th is the release of CLUB MONSTROSITY!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can't believe it, but we really, truly, Read more [...]

Tarantino Top to Bottom

There are a lot of screenwriters and directors who I have so much respect for. A good movie can just drag you through emotion and I'm a big "rewatcher" (there are movies in our collection that I've seen dozens of times). Now I realized Quentin Tarantino can be a somewhat polarizing figure as a director. He's very eccentric in interviews, his movies are ultra-violent and some people I guess just don't like him. But I adore Tarantino. I love his balance of humor and violence, I love the voice of Read more [...]

My Favorite Websites

As mentioned previously in my Time Suck post, I am a bit of an internet person. I swear, I really need an unplugged machine, but I would die. When the zombie apocalypse comes, I'm going to be the zombie sitting in an internet cafe, pressing a button over and over again while the tiny light of my previous light goes out. So here are the websites I visit most: 1. Facebook - I generally stop here several times a day. But I call it work because I stop by my Jesse Petersen Author Page. That makes it Read more [...]
